Could Challenging Chiefs Schedule Make Missing Playoffs Possible in '26?

The Kansas City Chiefs begin this season facing bigger, scarier questions than ever before in the Patrick Mahomes era. It's tough to know how the secondary will perform after a complete overhaul. The wide receiver room has numerous young, high-ceiling performers that have issues with staying on the field. The greatest tight end in football history is either just barely past his prime or about to look ancient, depending on who you ask. With all this uncertainty and surely more to analyze as the season goes on, the experts at DraftKings and me are still predicting double-digit victories for the Chiefs. Will that be enough to avoid back-to-back seasons of the Chiefs missing the playoffs?

The current over/under for the Chiefs' regular season win total is 10.5 at DraftKings. Only the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams have a higher expected win total. After 10 straight seasons of winning at least 10 games, the Chiefs went 6-11 last year, and the offense sputtered with or without Mahomes. Kansas City finished 20th in yards per game and 21st in points last season. We'll spend more time analyzing the offense as the season progresses, but the focus this offseason was clearly on upgrading the running game. Replacing previous average-at-best production with Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III and bringing back running backs guru Eric Bienemy represents a clear improvement here, but other changes for this team are more concerning.

Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and Bryan Cook all played a big role for KC last season, and they're all gone. McDuffie played in over 650 snaps representing over 65% of the playing time on defense. Watson and Cook both played over 850 snaps for more than 82% of the time the defense was on the field. The Chiefs traded up in the draft to get LSU's Mansoor Delane to be their next shut-down cornerback and signed Alohi Gillman to shore up the safety position for years to come. Early looks at Delane indicate potential greatness, but nothing empirical can be analyzed until this Monday at Arrowhead.

I'm not convinced that Denver's offense, which ranked 14th in points scored per game last year, will look that impressive when facing off with a presumably improved Chiefs defense that allowed the sixth-fewest points per game last season. I expect Mahomes to outshine Bo Nix, but I expect both teams' defenses to be more up-to-speed than the offenses in Week 1. Denver's defense is largely the same as the elite unit from last year, but I believe the most important athlete in Kansas City's history is about to put the whole football world on notice. This version of Mahomes has wisdom accrued from years of greatness plus a hunger to prove himself as the best in the world all over again. If you think the secondary will still be strong, and you think the Chiefs will apply pressure up the middle with Chris Jones and Peter Woods, which I do, then Kansas City should prevail on their home turf Monday night.

More importantly, if the defense still looks strong after the aforementioned changes, then the Chiefs have a high likelihood of earning a playoff berth. Struggles from that defense, though, could waste another year of Mahomes' prime. 10 of the Chiefs' regular season games will be played against an opponent that Vegas oddsmakers expected to have a winning record this season (teams with an over/under for regular-season wins at or above 9.5). Many of these tough games take place away from the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium, making them even more challenging. KC must travel to Seattle, Buffalo, Denver, Cincinnati and twice to Los Angeles, where they'll face both the Rams and Chargers.

I think teams that are presumably playoff-caliber like Baltimore, Buffalo, New England and the recently improved Bengals will make it difficult to reach the playoffs with a 10-7 record. I'm predicting all those teams - plus the Chiefs - to win at least 11 games this season. That means that losing to any of the subpar opponents on the schedule like Arizona, Miami, Vegas or the Jets could doom Kansas City to another year of relative irrelevance. Beating those opponents should be almost automatic, while beating high-quality opposition will require a defense that's at least average, and I think Kansas City can accomplish that. I'm picking the Chiefs to win 11 regular-season games and reach the playoffs, thanks in part to a gritty 20-16 victory over Denver in Week 1.

Will Denver Give Season's Beating to KC on Christmas?

I expected a Christmas night game between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs to be must-see TV. Now, I'm honestly more excited about watching basketball. In terms of sheer entertainment value, there's no contest between today's NBA action and today's Cowboys-Commanders game. I really don't understand how to ingest football as a fan of a non-competitive team, and I don't want to get used to it any time soon.

Since draft position is so vital to the future success of NFL franchises, fans of bad teams shouldn't even want victory in December. This leaves me and many other Chiefs fans in an odd mindset for tonight's game. Denver's fighting for the #1 seed in prime-time on Christmas. They have every reason to want this victory. The Chiefs have the rare and wonderful opportunity to draft near the top 10 for the first time since choosing the big-armed QB from Texas Tech that turned this team into a dynasty. This is a crazy statement, but it's also 100% true: the Chiefs' best-case scenario is to end their season with consecutive losses to the Broncos and Raiders.

It's hard to imagine the Chiefs scoring a bunch with their third-string quarterback against an elite Broncos defense still vying for top playoff seeding. KC's season average of 22.5 points per game ranks 20th in the league right now, but they averaged 22.6 last year, which was good for 15th in the league by the end of the regular season. Scoring in the NFL slows down in December, when the weather gets cold and defenses get more serious. I expect KC to struggle to score, while Denver coasts, so my holiday gift for you is a safe bet - go with the UNDER for total points at 47.5 for -430 on DraftKings. That means the Chiefs could lose 31-16 and still make you a little extra cash to burn on New Year's Eve.

I'm predicting a 24-10 defeat at the hands of Denver today. Remember that brighter days for the Chiefs are on the horizon, and remember that enjoying whatever we can with people who love football and love us is what really matters. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and thanks for sticking with me here at The Report.

Can Motivated Mahomes Outmatch Dominant Denver Defense?

One of their most important regular season games in years awaits the 5-4 Kansas City Chiefs this afternoon. Without a win today, KC will almost certainly fail to win their division. This would force them to play road games in the playoffs. It would also force fans like us to consider the possibility that the Chiefs don't make the playoffs at all, which would make for an unprecedented low-point in the Mahomes-Reid era. To dismiss all these concerns today, the Chiefs must find a way to score against a defense that's on pace to be one of the all-time greats.

The 8-2 Denver Broncos' dominant defense is the reason they're leading the AFC West. The Chiefs aren't too far behind in many important categories, though. KC ranks sixth in total yardage allowed per game, and Denver ranks third. The Broncos also rank third in points allowed per game, but the Chiefs are right behind in fourth place league-wide. The biggest difference comes in these teams' abilities to attack opposing quarterbacks.

Denver has 46 sacks, which is a total that only seven teams reached in the entire 2024 regular season and 14 more than any other team this season. Three different Broncos have at least six sacks. Nick Bonitto has 9.5 and a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year. So, if the Chiefs are facing a divisional opponent with a Super Bowl-winning coach and a defense that's historically great on paper, why am I not worried?

Bo Nix is the reason. He's an objectively below-average QB at this point. ESPN's QBR thinks he's just normal-bad, while the Passer Rating algorithm thinks he's worse than Justin Fields. That Denver defense is incredible, and they're an eight-win team, and I still don't believe in them at all. I know they can only play the teams on their schedule, but the amount of duds on that schedule makes their record seem like a mirage.

Jalen Hurts' Eagles are the only good team with a good quarterback the Broncos have beaten so far. They played two early-season games against teams with quarterbacks considered good this season - Indy's Daniel Jones and the Chargers' Justin Herbert - and they lost both games. They held a potent Cowboys offense to 24 points and posted 44 on that awful defense in late October. Aside from these four games with capable QBs in which the Broncos went 2-2 and looked flawed, Denver has feasted on mediocrity.

They faced Cam Ward, Jake Browning, Justin Fields, Jaxson Dart, Davis Mills (Stroud got hurt after 10 pass attempts) and Geno Smith. They beat the Jets, Giants, Texans and Raiders by nine points combined. The've played more teams that are currently in last place than teams that currently have winning records. That victory over Philly is Denver's only victory against a winning football team.

In a must-win moment, trusting Patrick Mahomes is my nature. Trusting Bo Nix more in that kind of moment is incomprehensible. It may be ugly, it may not impress all the Chiefs' critics, but the Chiefs aren't losing a game this important against a team so accustomed to facing inferior competition. I'm picking the Chiefs to win a tense 20-17 battle.

Carson Can Keep Colorado Clash Close

Ice and snow blanket the Kansas City streets today, but the Red and Gold Report refuses to rest. Many key starters for the Chiefs will rest today, though, because the #1 seed is already assured. Chris Jones, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are all sitting out today as healthy non-participants. Jawaan Taylor and Isiah Pacheco will sit due to short-term injury concerns. Even with all these key pieces of KC's starting roster taking today off, there is no guarantee for victory for the Chiefs' opposition.

The 9-7 Denver Broncos can clinch a playoff berth with a win today, but a loss ends their season. A team that relies on a defense ranking fifth in the NFL in total yards allowed per game will now need to trust a rookie quarterback in his first do-or-die scenario. The guy the Chiefs are playing at quarterback isn't so bad, by the way. Carson Wentz is a 32-year-old former Pro Bowler and a #2 overall draft pick. In his last full season as a starter, he played 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts and posted a 94.6 Passer Rating. That Rating was 17th in the league, while Mahomes' Rating from that year ranked 15th.

Denver's potential franchise QB Bo Nix has compiled a Passer Rating of 89.2 in his rookie campaign. He's thrown two fewer touchdown passes and five more interceptions than Wentz when Wentz played his last full season. I know Vegas has the Broncos favored at home by 10.5 points, but I'm not so sure that the Carson Wentz Chiefs are more than a touchdown and a field goal worse than the Broncos. Left tackle D.J Humphries and a big chunk of the Chiefs secondary will be going at full-speed to get playoff-ready today. That's enough to make me believe the Chiefs will cover the spread, but I can't go all the way and predict a KC victory. I'm predicting a 23-20 defeat for the resting, reigning champs.

How Coaching Rookies Affects Revived Chiefs-Broncos Rivalvry

It's hard to tell if the Denver Broncos are legit this season. If they are, the Kansas City Chiefs may have their first real divisional rival in years. The Broncos are 5-4 with their freshly drafted quarterback Bo Nix, who gives those fans more hope than they've had in a decade. Denver also just lost by 31 points and allowed the football equivalent of a perfect game to be thrown by the opposing quarterback. The Broncos' defense looked awesome before last week's 41-10 stinker against Lamar Jackson's Ravens, and despite that, Denver still only has one win against a team with a record above 3-6.

The Broncos defense ranks sixth in passing yards and total yards allowed per game and third overall in points allowed per game. Their offense ranks in the bottom ten in each of those categories. Bo Nix's Week 7 performance against Carolina was the best of his early career, but last week against Baltimore - who allows the most passing yards per game and ninth-most points per game in the NFL - was easily his worst. It's not often you see a week-to-week difference in Passer Rating above 58 points. Broncos head coach Sean Payton is apparently a quarterbacks guru, so Nix's response to this unpredictable two weeks of play will reflect Payton's effectiveness in what is supposedly his strong-suit.

The undefeated Chiefs exhibit their weaknesses every time they take the field while still, ya know, winning all the time. The left tackle position in particular is worryingly inconsistent, which factors heavily into a Patrick Mahomes Passer Rating that ranks 18th league-wide. Whether it's Wanya Morris or rookie Kingsley Suamataia taking the lion's share of snaps at that spot today, every passing week Andy Reid gets to strategize his way around that flaw should further improve the KC offense. Despite being sacked four times last week, Mahomes had his first three-touchdown performance of the season and finished the game with his highest completion percentage of the season. The growth of future Hall of Famer DeAndre Hopkins' role in the offense also looked like it made an immediately positive impact.

This game means the world to a Denver team that's hungry for a signature win. With the enviable burden of an undefeated record, the Chiefs also have immeasurable motivation entering today's game. Despite my far-too-consistent ramblings about Mahomes' statistical mediocrity this season, his numbers on third down, in the red zone and in the fourth quarter all point to a quarterback and a team that refuse to lose. I'll take the safe bet and predict that this won't change today against a Denver team that has proven its ability to lose to teams with flaws far more damaging that Kansas City's. I'm predicting a 27-17 victory for our Chiefs - the defending and dominant rulers of the AFC West.

KC Visits Snow-Covered Mile-High as Major Vegas Favorites

The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos approach this Halloween on two extremely different paths. The Chiefs continue their push to be the best in football, and the Broncos continue their efforts to regain respectability. After beginning the season looking like the worst NFL defense in years, Denver just held the Green Bay Packers to 17 points 10 days after limiting the Chiefs to 19. The Broncos now face the tough task of stopping a Chiefs offense that seems to have just found its stride. Patrick Mahomes posted the highest QBR of his season last week when he threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns on the Los Angeles Chargers' weak secondary.

Perhaps that won't happen this afternoon, seeing that Adam Schefter just tweeted a Denver forecast for 6-14 inches of snow and temperatures between 13 and 29 degrees Fahrenheit. However, since KC's highly improved defense is without one of its best players today, the nasty weather could turn into an advantage for the Chiefs. Nobody can be sure how KC's defense will function in the long-term without Nick Bolton. Drue Tranquill played well when filling in for Bolton earlier this season, but replacing the 2022 leader in total tackles is never easy. Facing Russell Wilson and the objectively subpar Denver offense, especially in bad weather, should be a relatively easy test for Tranquill. Good thing Chiefs GM Brett Veach brought Drue in this offseason. That's far from the only thing KC's big-picture decision-maker did well in order to set KC up for success this year.

Veach deserves immense credit for building a top-shelf secondary on a budget. This KC secondary ranks in the top 10 in practically every relevant statistic, and only the veteran safety Justin Reid will make more than $2.8 million this year. That careful money management allowed enough salary cap space for signing impact players like defensive end Charles Omenihu, who just returned last week and immediately made his presence felt. This defense is the best Mahomes has ever played with, and Chiefs Kingdom has Brett Veach's drafting and budgeting skills to thank for that.

Sure, this is a trap game in many senses, with the desperate Denver team and the crappy weather and all that. Does anyone really think the Chiefs will lose this one, though? The Vegas odds-makers definitely do not. Even past noon on Sunday, KC is a 6.5-point favorite on the road in a snowstorm. I have to agree. I'm predicting a 20-13 victory for the Chiefs and maybe a strong Bloody Mary for me while I try to forget how awful the weather will be in the Midwest for the next half of a year.

Herbert-Mahomes Meeting Makes Dramatic Divisional Duel

The 5-1 Kansas City Chiefs survived an ugly game at Arrowhead last Thursday, and they're gearing up for another tough battle on home turf this afternoon. The 2-3 Los Angeles Chargers bring a top-shelf offense into KC while the Chiefs' offense still cannot catch its stride. LA's head coach is on the hot seat, and football pundits nationwide are slowly-but-surely souring on Justin Herbert. A Chargers victory over their intradivisional nemesis to bring them to .500 would be huge for them right now. Spoiling all that for LA won't be easy, but the Chiefs have the right tools for the job.

The San Francisco 49ers allow the fewest yards per game in the NFL this season, averaging 14.5 points allowed per game. The Chiefs are right behind them with a 14.7 average. This is undoubtedly the best defense of the Patrick Mahomes era. KC is currently the only team in football ranked among the top five in both yards per game and yards allowed per game. That makes the Chiefs a truly daunting opponent every time they take the field.

LA moves the ball well, but they haven't yet proven they can beat teams with strong defenses. The Chargers offense ranks in the top eight league-wide in total yards, total passing yards and total points per game. However, LA has only played one team with a defense considered elite - the Dallas Cowboys - and the Chargers only scored 17 points. KC probably won't hold Chargers running back Austin Ekeler to under two yards per carry like Dallas did, but the Chiefs continue to show that their young, athletic defense is no joke. Herbert has his work cut out for him today, and he's already proven himself to be highly unpredictable this season.

Today's game features the QBs with the #5 and #6 QBRs in football, but the gap between Mahomes at five and Herbert at six is far more vast than it seems. Herbert had a nearly perfect game against the Minnesota Vikings when he completed 85% of his passes for over 400 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. He also has posted a sub-60 QBR in three of his five games played in 2023. Mahomes has only dipped below a 69 QBR (nice) once this season, with his 59.5 last week against Denver.  Herbert has played 23.1 points below his QBR average and 26.7 points above it. Mahomes has played 13.3 points below his average and only 8.8 points above it.

I know that's a weird, semi-deep dive, but I find it informative. The consistency of play between these two QBs is miles apart, even if that unfortunately indicates that Mahomes is consistently "good-not-great" so far this season.

The Chiefs only scored 19 against a Denver defense that was allowing over 36 points per game before coming to Arrowhead in Week 6. The Broncos rank last in the league in total yards allowed per game, but the LA Chargers are the league's second-worst in that category. They allow the most passing yards per game through six weeks of the season. LA's defense allows the 10th-lowest yards per game to opponents' tight ends, which could bother a Chiefs offense that hasn't found success throwing to anyone other than Travis Kelce lately. However, the Chargers allow the second-highest Passer Rating on wide receiver targets this season and the most yards to receivers per game. Perhaps that will help KC finally find more rhythm in the passing game.

KC should win today, but I cannot predict a blow-out victory. One of the Chiefs' key issues offensively is their red zone touchdown scoring percentage dropping down to 18th in the league right now, while the Chargers rank 5th in that regard. It's hard to beat Justin Herbert scoring field goals. That's why I'm predicting a gritty, exciting 26-24 victory for KC. Insert pun about Taylor Swift and Bad Blood here to please the SEO robots - the end.

Can KC's Struggling Offense Brutalize Bitter Broncos?

How would you feel if your boss was fired after a bad performance, then the new boss immediately calls the old boss an inept moron, but then your new boss is just as bad, if not worse, than your old one? Would you feel confident about your new boss's ability to position you for success? Can you see where I'm going with this?

The Denver Broncos roster must feel completely dejected right now. There is no way Sean Payton makes that clubhouse healthier than your average NFL head coach. Nobody held a gun to Sean Payton's head and told him to talk down to Nathaniel Hackett the way he did. Payton volunteered his opinion that Hackett provided Denver with "one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL" last season, but the Broncos are now a worse team with worse morale with Payton as their head coach. Nat Hackett now coordinates the offense for the New York Jets, the team who defeated Payton's Broncos 31-21 last Sunday.

Revenge is sweet, and sustained success is even sweeter. It seems as if Sean Payton won't enjoy either for a very long time.

There are positives to find if you look hard enough at Denver's season up to the this point, but they take a second to see. Denver started the season 0-2, but they only lost those games by a combined three points. Patrick Surtain II is still a legitimately great CB, and he'll be facing off with an injured Travis Kelce and a bunch of still-unproven Chiefs receivers. Russ has also improved this season, but he's still nowhere near elite.

Last year, Wilson tied with Justin Fields for the league lead in sacks taken with 55. Only two QB's that played in more than six games compiled a lower completion percentage last season. He finished with the 10th-most interceptions thrown and the fifth-lowest QBR. Wilson's current QBR is 22nd in the NFL, and his completion percentage is 17th. Five QB's have been sacked more than Russ, and his 11/2 touchdown pass/interception ratio is one of the NFL's best. Still, these numbers indicate that Russ's ceiling is league-average at his position this year.

KC's offense may not be firing on all cylinders, but the Broncos aren't the team to make the Kingdom fear this flaw. They're the worst defense in the league by a comfortable margin. Denver allows over 45 more total yards and over 4 more points per game than any other team in the league. Isiah Pacheco could have another outstanding game, as the Broncos also allow more than 30 more rushing yards per game than any other NFL team. Breece Hall averaged 8.0 yards per carry last week and finished the day with 177 rushing yards.

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes aren't losing to a grumpy Sean Payton four days after Payton got humbled by the very man he publicly insulted. They aren't losing to a Broncos franchise that hasn't beaten them since the Obama administration. They aren't losing to a team that allowed 35 points to Sam Howell's Washington Commanders, 31 to Justin Fields' Chicago Bears, 31 to Zach Wilson's New York Jets and 70 to the only good quarterback/team combo they faced, Tua Tagovailoa's Miami Dolphins. I looked at power rankings from ESPN, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, Bleacher Report and Yahoo Sports, and they all ranked the Chiefs ahead of the Dolphins. KC may not drop 70 on Denver, but they should score enough to ensure victory tonight. I'm predicting a 31-17 win and a bunch of Taylor Swift references from the broadcast crew to get them through garbage time.

Division in Disarray as Chiefs Chase #1 Seed

Our Kansas City Chiefs won enough this year to stay in the hunt for the AFC's #1 seed with only two regular season games left. Meanwhile, the hapless Denver Broncos just fired their head coach midseason. Elsewhere in the AFC West, the similarly hapless Las Vegas Raiders just told their starting QB and two stand-out defenders to take a seat on the bench until the season's over. At least Chargers fans have a 9-6 record and the prodigious Justin Herbert to keep them hopeful. Neither the Broncos or Raiders have a head coach or a QB who has earned enough trust to give their fans a shadow of hope next season. That's gotta hurt.

It would also hurt if the Chiefs pooped the bed by losing to either one of these hopeless teams with the #1 seed still within reach. The Broncos have a -1 turnover differential on the season, which is better than KC's -5, and their defense still ranks seventh-best or higher in total yards allowed, passing yards allowed and points allowed per game. Those are the only things Denver can claim to do better than Kansas City. Russell Wilson and the statistically horrible offense he leads hasn't stopped being horrible over the last three weeks, if you can believe that. Denver also has serious penalty problems, which was probably a factor in deciding to give their head coach the boot before the season was over.

The Titans, who played their 16th game of the season Thursday, lead the league in yards lost to penalties with 917. Denver has lost 912 yards to penalty while playing one less game. The third-highest amount of yards lost to penalty is 76 yards fewer. That third-worst ranking belongs to the Raiders, by the way, who will face KC in the regular season's final week.

The Broncos need more than a different head coach if they want to beat the Chiefs while KC is still fighting for a first-round bye in the playoffs. I'm predicting a routine 31-14 Chiefs victory that keeps their hopes for reclaiming the #1 seed in the conference alive. It feels great to be a citizen of Chiefs Kingdom, especially while witnessing two of our divisional "rivals" fail to deliver for their success-hungry fanbases.

How Many MVP Candidates Can You Pay With Russell Wilson's Contract?

The Kansas City Chiefs must be hungry to show their skills after a disappointing loss to Joe Burrow's resilient Cincinnati Bengals. The Denver Broncos must be deflated after crashing to the bottom of their division thanks largely to the struggles of their well-paid Subway spokesman playing quarterback. These simple facts make this week's Chiefs-Broncos game particularly easy to analyze and predict.

The Broncos actually have terrific numbers on defense, which makes Russell Wilson's legacy-tarnishing ineffectiveness even more painful for their fans. Perhaps Denver's defensive stats are in fact skewed by how little their opponents need to score in order to win. Whatever the case may be, the Broncos allow the NFL's third-fewest total yards, third-fewest passing yards and second-fewest points per game. This represents a nearly unmatched level of prowess on that side of the ball, yet it resulted in a hopeless losing season for Denver. They're about to finish last in a division that includes a team coached by Josh McDaniels.

I know it's the trendy thing to dunk on Russell Wilson right now, but any honest analysis of this Denver team makes more dunking inescapable. Judging by any metric we could possibly use to measure quarterback performance, Wilson has been one of the five worst at his position this year. His Adjusted QBR and Passer Rating are 28th and 29th, respectively. He leads one of only five teams who have already accumulated nine losses this season. For the price Denver is paying for Russell's services, they could instead double Geno Smith's salary, pay that, and also pay Joe Burrow. Geno and Joe are on pace to get MVP votes on the new five-vote ballots. Russell is on pace to never film another sandwich commercial again.

Wilson's ineffectiveness paired with the Chiefs' hunger to bounce back from a sobering defeat at the hands of their new arch-rivals should result in decisive victory for KC. Denver has held their opponents to 17 or fewer points in 8/12 games so far this season, so Chiefs Kingdom shouldn't be concerned if Mahomes doesn't put up 50. I'll predict a 24-16 victory for KC, and I really hope it comes in the afterglow of another New York Jets victory over the conference-leading Buffalo Bills. If the Jets can help out Chiefs Kingdom yet again, KC can regain the pole position for the #1 seed in the AFC.

Quick Predictions for Every '22 Regular Season Chiefs Game

Are you fired up yet, KC? Our Kansas City Chiefs begin their regular season today against Kyler Murray's Arizona Cardinals. To commemorate the beginning of meaningful football in Chiefs Kingdom, I'm looking through KC's schedule and making a quick prediction for each game.

KC's first game against the Cards could have been a significant test for KC with DeAndre Hopkins on the field. Without his play-making ability, I'm giving the clear edge to the Chiefs here. Reid/Mahomes beats Kingsbury/Murray until proven otherwise, even though Kingsbury/Murray is really fun to say. Predicted Record: 1-0.

Game #2 is a toss-up at Arrowhead Stadium against the Los Angeles Chargers. Let's balance some of my upcoming optimism by predicting an L for the Chiefs here. The Chargers have the talent, if not the experience, of a Super Bowl contender. It could be Justin Herbert's time to step up and get to that next level of playoff success, but Mahomes and Burrow still stand in his way. Predicted Record: 1-1.

The Indianapolis Colts shouldn't be favored by anyone in Week 3, despite still having Wild Card potential this season. Indy could even challenge the steady Tennessee Titans for that division title, but they're one of many teams who won't quite stack up with KC this year. Predicted Record: 2-1.

Week 4 takes the Chiefs to Tampa for a second straight road game. KC could lose this one, but I'll give them the edge over a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that's lost some momentum and talent since their Super Bowl LV victory. We'll cover this topic exhaustively when the time comes. Predicted Record: 3-1.

The Las Vegas Raiders then return to KC to lose to Mahomes for the eighth time in his ninth game facing that franchise. This will be the Raiders' fifth game under new head coach Josh McDaniels and stud wide-out Davante Adams. Real offensive cohesion will presumably take longer than that. Predicted Record: 4-1.

The Buffalo Bills travel to Arrowhead for a game where they'll seemingly have the edge. KC snuck by last time when they still had Tyreek Hill, and Buffalo could now be the league's best team on paper. It's hard to bet against the Bills this week...or this whole dang season. Predicted Record: 4-2.

The San Francisco 49ers should present a unique challenge with a strong coaching staff, but I'm giving KC the edge in this one. That means I'm predicting KC to win two rematches of recent Super Bowls within four weeks. Weird. Predicted Record: 5-2.

The Chiefs follow up their bye week with a trip to Nashville for an intriguing test of the new-look defensive line, which should be somewhat galvanized at this point. Any significant success in limiting Tennessee Titans star RB Derrick Henry should lead to a Chiefs victory. Predicted Record: 6-2.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may improve throughout this season, but not enough to upset the Chiefs in Week 10. Back-to-back home games against beatable opponents represents a strange must-win pair of games for KC when they have such a brutal schedule before and after this short stretch. Predicted Record: 7-2.

Chiefs split the season series with the Chargers by winning this Week 11 game in LA. This is my least-confident prediction. I wouldn't be shocked if KC swept the Chargers, or if it happened the other way around. Predicted Record: 8-2.

The Los Angeles Rams don't represent an automatic L for KC, but the reigning champs are one of very few teams who could arrive in Arrowhead late in the season as the betting favorite. Give them the win here, but could KC get revenge in The Big Game? Crazier things have happened. Predicted Record: 8-3.

Speaking of revenge, I want so badly to pick KC to win on the Cincinnati Bengals' home turf in Week 13. Truth is, Burrow's Bengals have the Chiefs' number until proven otherwise. This kinda reminds me of what I typically say about Mahomes. That's how the benefit of the doubt works when it's earnestly earned. Predicted Record: 8-4.

The tradition of over-panicking in Chiefs Kingdom will take place later than usual this time around, specifically when KC loses in Denver in Week 14. This hypothetical path puts the Chiefs dangerously close to missing out on the playoffs entirely, despite hypothetical wins over strong competition like the Bucs and Chargers. All these possible paths indicate that even reaching the playoffs is no given for KC this season. Predicted Record: 8-5.

Wins against Houston and Seattle will put an end to some fear in the fanbase, just in time for an exciting face-off with the Broncos at Arrowhead. Both the Texans and Seahawks are expected to stink, so they're the duo that earns the least analysis time from me or probably anyone else. Predicted Record: 10-5.

Vegas oddsmakers predict the Wilson/Hackett version of the Broncos to win 10-11 games this season. Am I the only person wondering about this? I want to give Denver the win, for balance or for being devil's advocate or for simply believing the experts, but my gut says it won't happen. The Chiefs blank the Donkeys this year to stomp on their fans' hopes and reach an impressive 11-win record with one regular season game left. Predicted Record: 11-5.

Week 18 will could decide some critical playoff seeding for KC, while perhaps being the last chance for the Raiders to earn a Wild Card. This tightly contested game should be won, as it usually is, by the superior duo of QB and head coach. That duo will belong to Kansas City for at least two more presidential elections. Predicted Record: 12-5.

That's a high bar to set for what we expect this season, yet I predict that this still leaves KC without a divisional title. I think the Chargers are about to look excellent. A variety of factors could prove me wrong, including injuries, turnover concerns and major flaws on special teams. If all goes well for Herbert's crew, however, I expect them to win around 13 games and the AFC West crown.

I'll review the Cards game, preview the Chargers game and give my Chiefs-related playoff predictions next week. Check in then for plenty more Chiefs Kingdom content.

Could Denver's Defense Doom Chiefs' Chance to Reclaim #1 Seed?

Broncos fans enjoyed flashes of hope last November when Denver beat the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers. Aside from these wins, Denver has only claimed victory over teams who currently have losing records. The Kansas City Chiefs need the victory today to put pressure on the Tennessee Titans, who would hand the #1 seed back to the Chiefs if KC handles their business today and Tennessee is toppled by the mighty Houston Texans tomorrow. It should surprise no one to see oddsmakers predicting both games to be decided by ten or more points.

Perhaps the biggest potential for surprise in either game, with respect to Dangerous Davis Mills in Houston, comes from the Denver defense. The Broncos ranks among the league's top ten in most major defensive statistics, making them a good test for a Chiefs offense that experienced a shaky middle of the season. Despite failing to score more than 20 in any game from Week 5 to Week 9, the Chiefs currently sit in the top four league-wide in total yards, passing yards and points per game. Scoring 31 or more in their last four games made that possible. 31 points, unfortunately, wasn't enough to make achieving victory possible in Cincy last week.

Rookie legend-in-the-making Ja'Marr Chase had the greatest regular season performance in wide receiver history for the Cincinnati Bengals last week. All that production was just enough to sneak past Kansas City with a field goal as time expired. Unless some Bronco can also go off for 266 receiving yards, I like the Chiefs' odds this afternoon. The two-digit spread for this game makes sense when you compare the aforementioned success of Kansas City's offense with the fact that Denver has scored 13 points or fewer in their last three games. I'm predicting a 27-17 victory for the Chiefs.

Divisional Drama Deepened by Denver's Dominant Defense

The resurgent Kansas City Chiefs face off with the resilient Denver Broncos at Arrowhead tonight in the first of three straight intra-division games on the Chiefs' schedule. KC's recent success made them frontrunners for winning the AFC West, but a loss tonight could once again flip this division on its head. Many may underestimate these 6-5 Broncos, but Denver's point differential this season is exactly one point higher than the Chiefs' +31. What's keeping this previously unheralded Broncos team in the mix?

Defense is how Denver achieved consistent success this season. Their passing yards and total yards allowed per game rank in the top ten league-wide. Their points allowed per game ranks third behind only the Pats and Bills, but the vast majority of offenses Denver faced so far range from average to awful. The Broncos limited the Dallas Cowboys to 16 points in Week 9, but the Cowboys were without brick wall left tackle Tyron Smith that day. Aside from Dallas, the highest-scoring offense Denver has faced is the Philadelphia Eagles, whose 25.3 points per game ranks 13th in the NFL. KC scores a similar 25.5 points per game this year, which ranks ninth.

The Chiefs undoubtedly enter this game with momentum, but the offense has still failed to meet expectations. Through their current four-game winning streak, Kansas City only scored over 20 points once. Denver excels in dropping back two safeties and limiting big plays, which is exactly how the rest of the league has stalled KC's offense all season long. Impressive rookie cornerback Pat Surtain II will also make today difficult for Tyreek Hill - the Chiefs' key deep threat. This could keep tonight's game closer than Vegas oddsmakers predict.

Despite Denver's imposing defense, I expect the Chiefs to prevail tonight. The bye week gives Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes an extra week to scheme up something to counter teams dropping back two safeties. We should see an improvement from Kansas City's offense because of this, but one extra week won't solve all their struggles. I predict an ugly 23-17 victory for Kansas City.

Will KC's Defense Look Better Against Rival Raiders In Week 2?

An intriguing challenge for our Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 seemingly became less intriguing when Nick Foles left the game and seemingly erased the Jacksonville Jaguars' realistic hopes for victory. However, rookie backup QB Gardner Minshew completed his first 13 pass attempts and the Jags finished the day with 428 total yards. a . Minshew was the 2018 PAC-12 Offensive Player of the Year, and his story is legit, so perhaps he's better than many in Chiefs Kingdom had presumed (myself included). Still, members of that new Chiefs defense must've been shaking their heads after allowing an unheralded sixth-round pick to earn a 122.5 Quarterback Rating.

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr earned a 121 Quarterback Rating against the Denver Broncos last week. Even though I call him mean nicknames for my own amusement on a regular basis, Carr is a veteran QB who just led his squad to a win over a division rival with a solid defense. His offensive line also stopped the intimidating duo of Von Miller and Bradley Chubb and the rest of the Denver D from sacking Carr a single time. Chiefs Kingdom is justifiably scared about both the secondary and the edge rushing capability of this freshly rebuilt KC defense, so this looks like another setup for a fitting test.

My focus is clearly on the defensive side of the ball for the next chapter of this recently lopsided  rivalry because it's still easy to be confident about KC's offense. Tyreek Hill is tough to replace, but the Chiefs just so happened to spend their first-round pick with the motive of replacing Tyreek Hill for several weeks. This should somewhat ease the minds of Chiefs fans everywhere, as we can once again be confident about rolling into Oakland with a high-octane offense. Add the Jonathan Abram injury to the mix, and we've got the makings for Mahomes Magic and a lot of points on the board. My only concern would be keeping Patrick safe from Clelin Ferrell and Company. Let's see how the Mahomes-Mecole Connection feels, and let's see how KC's defense bounces back from their uninspiring start to the season.

Doug LaCerte is currently too busy looking at Gardner Minshew memes to care about Twitter or Facebook.

The Mahomes Era Begins Kinda!

This afternoon's Week 17 game at Arrowhead will matter, even if it doesn't affect this year's playoff seeding. Many younger Chiefs will get more snaps than ever before, and one NFL record is still attainable. Of course, the #1 reason to enjoy this week of football is very, very clear...

1. The Patrick Mahomes II Era kinda-sorta begins today! KC waited over 30 years to draft a franchise QB in the 1st round, and today we get a tease of Chiefs football with Pat leading the offense. Despite Denver's disdain for KC, and their legit defense, they know they have nothing to play for. The Broncos don't even get a chance to play spoiler this time. I don't see Denver playing with a lot of spirit in frigid conditions during a meaningless road game. The wind chill should reach -10 degrees by halftime, so motivation could be a hard thing to find on the Denver sideline this afternoon.

Also, a game without a turnover would give KC an NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season. This gives Mahomes another reason to stay mostly conservative today. Young, part-time contributors like Demarcus Robinson will get a chance to shine today as he starts alongside Mahomes. Robinson's growth in the coming seasons means a lot to KC's offense, so the chemistry between Pat and Demarcus is something to watch closely this afternoon. I predict a safe, but solid effort from KC's future QB, with at least one of those impressive "no-look" throws and at least one bomb of over 55 yards - perhaps to Robinson.

2. Chiefs Kingdom will also be keyed in on multiple other games that will decide who comes to KC in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. By playoff seeding standards, today's concerns for Chiefs fans are relatively simple to understand; the Ravens can beat the Cincinnati Bengals today to secure their playoff seeding and punch their tickets to Kansas City. If they don't, Tennessee can earn this spot by beating the Jaguars. If both these teams lose, Buffalo can earn this spot if they beat the Dolphins. Since Baltimore looks solid over their last several weeks of play, and because the Bengals simply stink this year, the excitement of seeing who KC will face in the playoffs may be short-lived today. I predict that the Ravens take care of biz and I start Googling embarrassing photos of Joey Flacco shortly thereafter.

3. Tanoh Kpassagnon will also get a chance to play the biggest role in any game of his young career so far. This 6'7" 2nd-round draft pick has oodles of raw talent and a highlight reel that makes me grin ear-to-ear every time I watch it. Pressuring the QB is key to a modern NFL defense, an K-Pass is our hope for a great edge-rusher for years to come. The importance of his impact on this game will be greatly understated because of Mahomes' first start, but a strong performance from Tanoh today should make the Kingdom thrilled to see more of him in the future. I predict two QB pressures from Kpassagnon today, as the Chiefs beat a disheartened Denver squad 27-17.

Regular Season Stats Analysis: Points Scored

The 2016 regular season is officially in the rear-view mirror for fans in the Kingdom, and that means it’s time to analyze the ever-livin’ out of those regular season stats. Your Kansas City Chiefs rank 20th in the NFL in yards per game, but they rank 13th in total points per game. Five of the 11 other teams with a playoff berth this year averaged fewer points per game than the Chiefs' 24.3. However, four of the NFL’s five highest-scoring offenses belong to Super Bowl contenders.

The Panthers, Cardinals, Pats, Steelers and Seahawks ranked #1-5 in points per game last year, in that order (with Pittsburgh and Seattle tied.) Each of those teams went to the playoffs and won at least their first game. This indicates that a top-shelf offense strongly correlates with playoff success, but it doesn't necessarily correlate with championships. We need only remember that none of the aforementioned offensive juggernauts won it all in 2015. Last year's Super Bowl-winning Denver Broncos ranked 19th with 22.2 points/game in 2015. They defeated the Panthers, the team that led the league with a 31.2 points-per-game average.

Three AFC playoff teams finished this regular season scoring more points per game than KC. Odds say the Steelers, who rank 10th league wide with 24.9 points per game, will face KC at Arrowhead on January 15th. If the Steelers lose, the Raiders, who rank 7th with 26 points, still need third-string QB Connor Cook to win a playoff road game against Houston today to earn another shot at the Chiefs this year. The New England Patriots, a fearsome foe looming in the distance as KC's potential opponent in the AFC Championship game, rank 3rd in the league with 27.6 points per game.

The two teams presumably standing in KC’s way to a Super Bowl appearance – Pittsburgh and the Pats – are the only other clubs in the AFC with better regular season offensive numbers than KC. If Pittsburgh takes care of business today, KC will face the Steelers at Arrowhead on the 15th. The last time Pittsburgh traveled to KC was the only time the Chiefs lost a game by more than one possession this year. You better believe the Kingdom will be starving for sweet revenge if we get that chance.

Even With Flaws, KC's Defense Is Elite

Your Kansas City Chiefs just earned their spot in the driver’s seat to a first-round bye in the playoffs, but which aspect of this team will be remembered for getting them there? After seeing your Chiefs bailed out time after time by a turnover or a crucial 3rd-down stop, is it really a question? The stats could dissuade you at first glance, but the defense in Chiefs Kingdom is elite.

Don’t let the league’s 27th-ranked yards allowed per game fool you; only seven teams allow fewer points per game than Kansas City does, and six of those teams are playoff-bound. Despite not forcing any turnovers last Thursday against the Oakland Raiders, KC is still tied for the most takeaways in the NFL this season. KC's efforts against some of the league's best QBs prove that the defense stays stout when it's needed most.

Drew Brees currently commands the highest-ranked offense in football, but the Chiefs held the Saints to 6.5 points less than their current average. KC held Andrew Luck and Indianapolis to 11.2 yards below their current average. The Chiefs also held Matt Ryan and his outstanding Falcons offense to 12 points in the second half to sneak away with an overtime win in Atlanta. KC's defense limited Cam Newton, the reigning offensive MVP, and they humbled the former MVP front-runner Derek Carr by handing him an embarrassing loss at a crucial moment in the season. Twice.

Our Chiefs already played the teams who rank first, second, third and fourth in average points per game. The New England Patriots are #5. How's that for foreshadowing?

We can’t look too far ahead, however, as the Tennessee Titans could threaten our chance for playoff football at Arrowhead Stadium this year. It will continue to be painfully cold in KC tomorrow, and the Chiefs’ inability to stop the run makes Tennessee an opponent that should be taken seriously.

The Titans rank 3rd league-wide in rushing yards per game, while only five NFL teams allow more rushing yards per game than Kansas City. Only one of the teams worse at stopping the run than KC – the Denver Broncos – has probable odds to reach the playoffs. Tennessee is the best running offense the Chiefs will face this regular season, making Andy Reid and Company’s extra days of game-planning even more beneficial.

The mega-cliché of the “bend-don’t-break” defense will be tested on icy Arrowhead turf tomorrow, but our 2016 Chiefs consistently pass tough tests. It’s gonna be ugly, again, but I believe KC has the big-play potential – even in nasty conditions – to sneak away with another victory. I predict yet another gritty, hard-fought victory for KC. The good guys will win, 20-16, and we’ll all feel a little bit warmer here in Chiefs Kingdom. I hope.

Do KC's Injuries Spell Doom In Denver?

An intense divisional rivalry returns to Mile High Stadium tonight, when your 7-3 Kansas City Chiefs take on the 7-3 Denver Broncos. This is the first time KC traveled to The Centennial State since pummeling the Broncos 29-13 over a year ago. Despite being two of the NFL’s best teams, neither team in tonight’s game is getting positive production from their quarterbacks.

Alex Smith hasn't looked like a legit franchise QB since he faced the defensively inept New Orleans Saints in Week 7. In fact, Alex only looked "good" in three, maybe four of KC's 10 games played so far this season. Smith went 17 for 24 against the Saints for 214 yards and 2 TDs without throwing a pick. In the week prior, he beat up the Oakland Raiders in Oakland with a 19/22, 224-yard performance that broke the franchise record for single-game completion percentage. In Week 3, Smith helped KC take advantage of a billion Ryan Fitzpatrick turnovers by completing 25 of 33 passes and earning 237 yards through the air.

We can also include his comeback performance against the San Diego Chargers in Week 1, when Alex threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns to overcome a huge deficit and lead KC to a 1-0 record. That's four games out of 10 in which your franchise QB looked average or better. Even with a few flashes of brilliance, Chiefs fans can't help but wonder if Smith is good enough to ever win them a Super Bowl. No team has won a Super Bowl with a subpar quarterback since- wait, never mind.

It can be done, but winning the Big Game without a good/great QB requires an excellent defense. When Kansas City brings all their defensive starters to the field, that's what they have. Sadly, the Chiefs enter this game without many of their most important defensive pieces today, which makes winning in Denver a tough bet. Jaye Howard, Dee Ford and Steven Nelson are out today, while Marcus Peters, Derrick Johnson and Dontari Poe are still listed as questionable. That’s one or two starters at every level of the defense that won’t be playing today. I tried mightily to sell myself on a Chiefs victory tonight, but it doesn’t seem likely.

In order for KC to win tonight, Smith needs to outperform Trevor Siemian. If not for the Chiefs’ current injury issues, I’d say that’s possible, if not likely. Both quarterbacks are similarly unimpressive at this point of the season; Smith ranks 26th league-wide in yards-per-game, while Siemian ranks 28th. Alex seemed to miss his Captain Checkdown moniker after impressing many Chiefs fans through Week 7, because he’s recently returned to that pointless short-pass style in a major way. Only six starting QBs have a higher completion percentage than Smith’s 67.2%, but 22 QBs with at least 200 pass attempts have a higher yard-per-catch average than Alex’s 6.9.

Things could get ugly if KC’s patchwork defense allows Siemian to get comfortable. If Denver’s young QB gets enough time in the pocket to consistently find Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, our Chiefs are in trouble. Thomas and Sanders both have over 50 catches, over 650 yards and average over 12 yards per catch. I have to predict a 20-13 loss for our Chiefs today, but it wouldn’t be too disastrous. I’m always stoked for a game against a division rival, but I’ll be even more excited to see KC face the defending champs with a healthy defense. A loss for our Chiefs today won’t be the end of the world, but a loss for the Broncos could really send them scrambling. That would be delicious, but not absolutely necessary for a strong KC playoff run.

AFC West's Best Faces Defending NFC Champs

Our Kansas City Chiefs found a way to avoid losing against a considerably lesser opponent last week, but in just minutes, the Chiefs face the defending NFC champs. We know Kansas City won't win all the games they "should", but they "should've" lost against the Jags last Sunday. The Chiefs earning a win in ugly fashion, and without many of their most important pieces, stands as evidence that KC is legit. However, fans can't take too much from a victory against such an inferior team. We can rest easy knowing they snuck away with a win, but it wasn’t a pretty moment for the Nick Foles-led Chiefs.

The cellar-dwelling 2-6 Jaguars dominated Kansas City in practically every important statistic, except for the stat that matters most - turnovers. Chiefs reporter BJ Kissel pointed out that during this four-game winning streak, the Chiefs never turned the ball over, and the defense forced 10 turnovers. Since the last time KC turned the ball over, the Denver Broncos have lost two games and given up the ball seven times. So, who's the best team in the AFC West?

I think it's the Chiefs, but man, it's close. The Oakland Raiders proved...something by beating up the Broncos last Sunday night, but I still don't think they proved they're as legit a team as the Chiefs. If anything, the Raiders only proved that Denver is less-daunting an opponent than I assumed.  The incredible softness of Oakland’s schedule and a commanding KC victory in The Black Hole tells me our Chiefs are the cream of the crop in the NFL’s best division. The extremely impactful emergence of Dee Ford could be the biggest reason why.

After myself and many others deemed him a bust, Dee Ford may end up helping KC reach a Super Bowl this year and solidify their defense in years to come. Thinking about this new-and-improved Ford opposite a fully functioning Justin Houston is enough to give me goosebumps. If Houston looks like himself shortly after returning to play this season, watching this duo will inspire confidence and make the diminishing production from Tamba Hali much less sad. Only six QBs in the league have been sacked more often than Cam Newton, so Ford’s contributions today could decide KC’s status in the division (for now).

On the other side of the ball, Carolina ranks 4th in sacks, and their front seven consistently stifles their opponents’ running game. KC ranks 27th in rushing yards allowed, while Carolina ranks 3rd. Spencer Ware is back in action now, and the Chiefs need him to succeed against a dominant defense in order to successfully control the clock in Carolina today.

Turnovers, or a lack thereof, will ultimately decide this game. Carolina owns the NFL’s 5th-worst turnover ratio, while KC has the league’s best. If the Chiefs continue on this pace, they’ll have a good chance at a win today, but it won’t be easy against a Panthers D that looks more daunting with every stat I read. Without the ability to manage the game by successfully run the ball, Andy Reid’s offensive game plan often goes haywire.

I’m predicting a 24-17 defeat for our Chiefs this afternoon, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see KC win. If they make me look stupid (won’t be the first time) and come away with a nice road victory, our Chiefs will be a bona fide first-place team for the first time this season. That would be something to be thankful for, but hey, let me save my corny Thanksgiving material for next week.

Chiefs Reach Week 8 Without Sense of Identity

This season's lack of wins against a “good” football team forces me to wonder about the identity of the 2017 Kansas City Chiefs. KC's a top-ten team according to power rankings from NFL.com, Sports Illustrated, ESPN and CBS Sports, but where's our signature win? I guess the Chiefs' most impressive victory so far was their Week 1 comeback against the last-place, 3-4 San Diego Chargers. That comeback gave both fans and teammates confidence that Alex Smith could elevate this offense when KC needed him most. Sadly, Smith then went on to score 14 points or less in two of KC’s next three games.

The offense has rarely been a total disaster, thanks to Spencer Ware's weekly Pro Bowl-caliber contributions, but rarely has it looked fully operational. KC ranks 19th league-wide in total yards per game, 17th in points per game and 14th in turnover percentage. They epitomize "average offense.” Bright sides include the 3rd-least-penalized offense in the NFL and a +7 turnover ratio that ranks 4th, but limiting mistakes alone doesn’t automatically make you great, or even good.

We can’t forget about the Oakland Raiders looking like a cellar dweller against our Chiefs in Week 6, and some may justifiably consider that KC’s greatest accomplishment of this youngish season. The Raiders aren’t half as legit as their 5-2 record would indicate, so I respectfully disagree. Oakland hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record, and they won three of those five games by 3 points or less. At least the Chargers can say they beat the Broncos in Week 6.

KC has four more games coming up against teams currently below .500. Each Sunday presents its own set of challenges, the Chiefs can't sleep on any of these hungry football teams and blah blah blah all those other clichés you’ve heard about "any given Sunday". That being said, KC won't be underdogs again until Week 12 when they travel to Colorado. That means the Chiefs could realistically reach an 8-2 record without defeating a “good” football team.

I wish I could say this upcoming game will give us some answers, but it looks like rinse-and-repeat (-and-repeat) for KC in Week 8. Oakland and New Orleans had several obvious similarities, and we can draw apparent parallels between the Saints and Indianapolis Colts, too. SI's Chris Burke even referred to Indy as "the AFC Saints" in his latest power rankings. So, for the third straight week, KC faces an opponent with a dynamic passing offense and a porous defense. They can still reuse much of the gameplan Andy Reid designed during the Week 5 bye. That alone would make the Chiefs a Vegas favorite this Sunday.

So, what is this team’s identity? When you think of this year’s Chiefs, what comes to mind? I’ll answer my own question with another question: is it a cop-out to just name the most outstanding players on the team? I definitely envision Marcus Peters picking off infuriated QBs while Spencer Ware blasts through opposing defenses, but a team identity rises above individual pieces. Due partly to their lack of a signature win this season, and despite being a top-ten team in the NFL, KC doesn’t have that. Losing is the only thing that can change the Chiefs’ identity until November 27th, when they face off with the Broncos at Mile High Stadium.
